Borderlands 3 PC Epic Store cloud save problem may be solved, but be careful for now

Borderlands 3 players are reporting loss of save data on the game's PC version.

Borderlands 3 is exclusive to the Epic Games Store on PC. Due to a bug in the store's cloud saves management feature, many have either lost their entire game progress, or several hours worth.

The issue was first reported at launch, forcing Epic Games to create an alert on its help page to indicate the problem, and how players could minimise the risk of save loss.

As with most apps that offer cloud saves, the Epic Store is supposed to alert users when the local save conflicts with the one stored in the cloud. This could occur when you play on more than one machine, or in cases where you make some progress offline and start your next session online.

The problem is that the conflict alert doesn't always show up, which means players run the risk of applying an outdated save. Epic Games actually issued a hotfix for the issue yesterday that should take care of the problem, but a 2K Games statement makes it sound like it may not be quite over just yet.

"We understand just how frustrating this situation is for those who have been affected, so we’re working with our partners at Epic to monitor the situation and ensure the issue gets fully resolved. We’re listening closely to our community and players, and will continue to do all we can to ensure the best experience possible for everyone," 2K games told IGN.

For now, it's recommended that you keep a separate backup copy of your save, just in case. Players who rely on cloud saves to transfer data between PCs should follow Epic's recommendations in the help page above to avoid pulling in - or uploading - and undesirable save.

When you're not running into any general performance problems on PC, or port issues on consoles, Borderlands 3 appears to be a solid game, albeit more of the same.
